Personality & Traits
| General Overview | Teyali is a dreamer, her head has been in the stars ever since she was a child. Growing up hearing stories of her family, and especially those of her Starfleet mother always had her wondering what life was like away from Bajor. Tey is rarely satisfied, she always wants to learn more or try one more experiment or read one more book. This drive also extends to her interpersonal relationships. Teyali is very Bajoran in many ways, she is forthright, passionate, and at times stubborn in her convictions. This stubbornness often lead to being rather outspoken and confrontational, especially when she was younger. Tey has worked a long time to balance these instincts and turn them into a open candor rather than an offensive bluntness. Tey is a daughter of two worlds, her mother is a Human from Earth, her family has a long history in the Federation and India. Her father was a Bajoran, his family merchants from before first contact with the Cardassians. Growing up on Bajor especially so soon after liberation, it was hard for Tey to strike a balance. For many in her father’s family she was too human to be a true Bajoran and this was hard on Tey. She delved into their culture, their religion, she would prove to anyone she could be just as good a Bajoran as she was a human. Despite being a Starfleet Officer, she is a form believer in the Prophets, understanding them both as some kind of super advanced beings but also as her deities. Some have challenged her faith and she has defended it vehemently. That's said she doesn't mind other opinions, but won't accept anyone questioning her own. For some her studies and beliefs were enough but for many in her early years no matter what she did it wasn’t enough. But as she got older and she met more of those in Starfleet and from the wider Federation she found more acceptance. This has turned Tey into a loyal and proud Starfleet Officer. |
|
| Strengths & Weaknesses | Fluent in Federation Standard, Bajoran, Hindi, and Tamil dialects Extensive knowledge of nonverbal alien communication systems. She finds alien cultures and languages fascinating. Practiced interpersonal negotiator, endeavors to defuse tensions with empathy and cultural awareness. She does have a bit of that Bajoran temper however and has had to work on her reactions over the years. Talented Baseball player and Bajoran tivara flute practitioner, often uses music in cultural exchanges. |
| Personal History | Born on Bajor in 2371, her mother a Starfleet Officer assigned to DS9 and her father a Bajoran Merchant. Her parents met when the Federation first came to Bajor. Their relationship wasn’t exactly harmonious at first, but the way her parents told it they won the other over. Teyali was born in late April 2371, while her parents were taking some leave time on Bajor. She came a bit early, Human-Bajoran pregnancies were all but unheard of and Doctor Bashir couldn’t give them a firm estimate when she’d be born. It turned out just in time to keep her mother from joining the crew of Voyager as a Temporary Chief Science Officer to assist with their mission in the badlands. Tey despite being born on Bajor grew up on Deep Space Nine. Attending Mrs O’Brien’s school as well as lectures at the Temple she got a very well rounded education as a youngster. She also started to encounter the first instances of being perceived as not Bajoran enough, especially at the Temple. The first time she met the Emissary she was confused, that was Captain Sisko, her mother’s Commander. It took time for the young Teyali to understand the nuance; but knowing who he was, interacting with him throughout her young life, with his son, gave her a whole other perspective many didn't have. When the Dominion War came to the Alpha Quadrant Tey’s family was advised to leave Bajor. Because of her mother there was worry that they would been as connected to the Enemy rather than the Bajoran people. Tey didn’t want to leave at first, but when Starfleet pulled out of DS9 she and the other Starfleet Families were evacuated. They were sent to Earth to live with her mother’s extended family. It was interesting getting to know this other part of her heritage, the rest of this family. Her mother had never hidden their heritage, but she also didn’t have much exposure to it. But Tey was young so it was understandable. While on Earth her father became very invested in the Family shipping business. In a way he finally was able to not just prove himself but also make them a full part of the larger Chakrabarti Family. They did eventually return to Bajor, but Tey had stepped foot on another world, she’d traveled the stars, and she couldn’t wait to go back. That didn’t mean she didn’t continue to learn about her mixed heritage, or study and grow her belief in the prophets… but she knew from a young age where she’d eventually end up. Her Bajoran family wasn’t exactly the mot thrilled about that. While yes Starfleet and the Federation seemed to have delivered Bajor from the Cardassians they also weren’t without their issues. Especially post war, her father’s business became rather intertwined with the relief efforts which only gave her more opportunities to explore and be exposed to alien cultures. By the time she was a teen Tey had been to half a dozen worlds including Cardassia. She had also gotten used to being an older sister. This meant taking charge, being responsible for them, and dealing with annoying siblings. In 2388 Tey left for Earth her first time being back in thirteen years to follow in her Mother’s footsteps and attend Starfleet Academy. Tey wasn’t the first Bajoran to join, but she was the first Human/Bajoran. She was also another in a long line of Chakrabarti’s; being both new and old to Starfleet was an interesting experience. Some instructors and senior students had higher expectations of her, others didn’t bother to give her any grace, and a very small minority weren’t so accepting of a Bajoran being a part of such a prominent human family. During her time at the Academy, Teyali embraced her love of alien cultures, her love of mysteries and science. More than embraced in fact, Tey excelled. She proved her instructors wrong and right, she learned what motivated her, what gave her that sense of accomplishment. Her earnest want to do well and understand other cultures gainedgained the attention of the diplomatic corps. For her junior year Cadet Cruise she shipped out on the USS Concordia. Although relatively uneventful, having the opportunity to participate in several second contacts and even an induction to the Federation, well it set her course. |
